Messaging Consent & Opt-In Policy

Effective date: 2026-04-10 · Last updated: 2026-04-10

This page explains exactly how PaidUp handles SMS and email consent. It describes the double opt-in process, the messages recipients will see, how to opt out, and the attestation every PaidUp user makes when they add a contact. This page is public so that recipients, PaidUp users, and platform reviewers can all verify the consent flow.

Who this page is for

How consent is captured

PaidUp is a personal IOU tracking iOS app used between friends and family. There is no public sign-up form for receiving messages. Instead, consent is captured through the following flow:

  1. A PaidUp user adds a contact they personally know. The user manually enters the contact's name, phone number, and/or email address into their private ledger on their device. At the moment of adding the contact, the user is shown an attestation screen requiring them to confirm that they have a personal, pre-existing relationship with that contact and permission to message them about informal debts.
  2. The user schedules or requests a reminder. No message is sent automatically. The user must explicitly turn on reminders for a given debt, choose a tone and schedule, and confirm.
  3. PaidUp sends a one-time confirmation SMS to the contact, identifying the sender by name and asking the contact to reply YES to receive further messages. This is the only message a contact will receive before they have consented.
  4. The contact must reply YES to opt in. No further messages are sent unless the contact affirmatively replies YES to the confirmation SMS. Contacts who do not reply receive no further messages of any kind.
  5. Confirmed contacts receive scheduled reminders on the user's chosen cadence, during quiet-hour windows, with a one-tap payment link and a clear opt-out mechanism in every message.
  6. A contact can opt out at any time by replying STOP, UNSUBSCRIBE, CANCEL, END, or QUIT. Opt-outs are honored within 24 hours and are global across all PaidUp users.

The exact first message every contact receives

Before any scheduled reminders are sent, PaidUp sends a single confirmation SMS. This is the exact template:

1. Confirmation (first message, double opt-in)
{sender_name} is using PaidUp to send you a reminder about an IOU. Reply YES to confirm you want to receive reminders, or STOP to opt out. Reply HELP for info. Msg & data rates may apply.

Only contacts who reply YES will receive any further messages from PaidUp.

Sample reminder messages

After a contact has opted in, they may receive scheduled reminders in one of three tones that the PaidUp user selects. Every reminder includes the sender's name, the amount, a one-tap payment link, and an opt-out instruction.

2. Friendly tone
Hey {recipient_name}! Friendly reminder you owe {sender_name} {amount} for {description}. Pay here: {payment_link}. Reply STOP to unsubscribe.
3. Firm tone
{recipient_name}, this is a reminder that you owe {sender_name} {amount} for {description}. Please pay at {payment_link}. Reply STOP to unsubscribe.
4. Formal tone
{recipient_name}, you have an outstanding balance of {amount} owed to {sender_name} for {description}. Please remit payment via {payment_link}. Reply STOP to unsubscribe.
5. Settled / thank-you
Thanks {recipient_name}! {sender_name} has marked the {amount} as paid. Your balance is clear. Reply STOP to unsubscribe from PaidUp.

Keywords that always work

PaidUp honors the standard CTIA keywords on every message, no matter the sender, tone, or schedule:

Reply with What happens
STOP, STOPALL, UNSUBSCRIBE, CANCEL, END, QUIT You are immediately added to the global opt-out list. No further messages of any kind will be sent to your number, from any PaidUp user, ever. You will receive one final confirmation SMS acknowledging the opt-out.
HELP, INFO You receive a reply with contact information for PaidUp support ([email protected]) and a link to this page.
YES, START, UNSTOP When replied to the initial confirmation message, this opts you in to receive reminders. It does not opt you back in if you have previously sent STOP — re-opting-in requires direct contact with PaidUp support.

Quiet hours

PaidUp never sends automated SMS or email reminders outside of reasonable hours. By default, messages are only sent between 9:00 AM and 8:00 PM in the sender's local timezone. PaidUp users can narrow this window per contact but cannot widen it beyond 8:00 AM–9:00 PM local time.

Messages are also rate-limited: a given contact will never receive more than one reminder for the same debt in any 48-hour period, and never more than three reminders for the same debt in total before the user is prompted to update or archive the debt.

User attestation

Every PaidUp user agrees to the following terms before adding any contact who will receive automated messages:

Data and subprocessors

SMS messages are delivered via Twilio. Email messages are delivered via Resend. Contact information, consent status, and opt-out lists are stored in Supabase with row-level security. See our Privacy Policy for the full list of subprocessors and data handling practices.
